Jay Dee Contractors

Westerly Storage Tunnel

Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District

Project Overview

The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) was a crucial component of Project Clean Lake, aimed at capturing 98% of combined sewer overflows for treatment. WST effectively mitigated overflows at two key points along the Cuyahoga River, significantly reducing overflow pollution by 328 million gallons annually. Construction involved three shafts exceeding 200 ft. in depth and excavating a 2-mile-long tunnel with a diameter of 25 ft. The tunnel, carved through shale, was lined with precast concrete segments. Slurry walls were strategically installed to provide robust support during shaft excavation.
