The Position: 

Jay Dee Contractors, Inc. is seeking a Safety Engineer to work on the O’Hare TP36 Construction Project at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.

The Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting day-to-day project safety operations and reports to the Project Manager and the General Superintendent for the majority of the day-to-day activities and relies on the Construction Safety Manager for additional support and guidance as needed.

The position holds a wide variety of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct safety walks and inspect equipment for unsafe work conditions.
  • Conduct safety training on various topics including the proper use of PPE and other safety equipment.
  • Facilitate project specific safety orientations and tool box talks.
  • Coordinate drug testing and pre-employment physicals and ensure accurate records are kept.
  • Conduct frequent jobsite walks and inspections and document findings in HCSS Heavy Job.
  • Monitor PPE supplies to ensure an adequate supply is always on hand to meet project needs.
  • Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments to control, eliminate, and prevent injury caused by chemical, physical or ergonomic factors.
  • Monitor ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance.
  • Maintain all necessary orientation, training, incident, and safety logs, including gas testing, air velocity, and other required tests.
  • Perform accident/incident investigations to identify root causes and determine how such accidents may be prevented in the future through retraining or education.
  • Assist with site specific programs including the pandemic plan and emergency response & tunnel rescue plans.
  • Continuing education in industry and safety regulations.
  • Additional responsibilities as directed by the Construction Safety Manager, Project Manager or Corporate Safety Director.

Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • This project is a multi-shift operation therefore flexibility to work second shift and some Saturdays as needed to support the project is required.
  • Ability to pass the O’Hare Airport Security Background Check process is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CSP and/or CHST preferred.
  • 0-5 years of related experience is required; heavy civil construction and/or underground tunneling experience is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and can take direction and run with it.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, analyzing data and developing creative, resourceful solutions.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities. Flexible and responsive.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management and organizational skills.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to climb a ladder, climb stairs, enter confined spaces, stand and walk and is occasionally required to balance and stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
