O’Hare Modernization Program – Runway 9C-27C Trunk Sewer System

City of Chicago Department of Aviation

Project Overview

The O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP) is one of the largest construction projects in the country at one of the world’s busiest airports and is managed by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA). The OMP is transforming O’Hare International Airport’s airfield from an outdated system of intersecting runways into a modern parallel runway configuration to reduce flight delays and increase capacity well into the future. The Trunk Sewer System E project will allow for the construction of the new 9C/27C runway.  The project included the construction of 6,700 ft. of 144 in. RCP storm sewer via pipe jacking.  Working on airport property and tunneling under active taxiways were among the many challenges encountered on this project.
