The Position: 

The Tunnel Heading Engineer Intern reports to the Project Engineer and performs both technical engineering and administrative duties in planning and overseeing construction of the tunnel, shafts, and underground systems.  Typical responsibilities require applying critical engineering and management thinking.

Principal Functional Responsibilities:

The position holds a wide variety of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

  • Record, analyze and report basic engineering functions related to underground construction.
  • Perform cost studies and estimating functions.
  • Perform downtime studies.
  • Perform basic geotechnical and structural analysis.
  • Develop a variety of CAD drawings for different aspects of the work.
  • Perform hands on activities in the job site or in the tunnel.
  • Perform quality control related activities including document control, survey, muck sampling, etc.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program in Civil, Construction, or Mining Engineering, or related field.
  • Major GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Completed at least two year of college education prior to start of internship.
  • Proficient computer skills with AutoCAD experience.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities. Self-motivated, flexible, and responsive.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities with the ability to develop positive working relationships in a cross functional team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management and organizational skills.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to climb a ladder, climb stairs, enter confined spaces, stand and walk and is occasionally required to balance and stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
