The Tunnel Construction Survey Party Chief reports to the Project Manager or Survey Manager and is responsible for daily on-site construction surveying tasks, performing quality assurance and quality control checks, and providing frequent updates regarding surveying activities. The Survey Party Chief must be a flexible and adaptable team-player with the ability to work outside in all weather conditions and in confined space environments.

Principal Functional Responsibilities:

The position holds a wide variety of responsibilities that include, but not limited to:

  • Lead a two-man field crew for construction and control work on the surface and underground.
  • Operate a Leica total station and a digital level with the onboard applications.
  • Provide positional support for the TBM (tunnel boring machine) guidance system.
  • Coordinate production activities with the public, on-site, and office personnel.
  • Recording all measurements and other data obtained during surveying and keeping track of construction progress.
  • Preparation and compilation of the obtained survey information in the form of plans, charts, various records and documents for immediate distribution and the future use.
  • Performance of equipment maintenance and periodical calibration.
  • Application of various methods of surveying while completing the field assignments.
  • Maintaining a stock of surveying consumables such as spray paint, bolts, nails, stakes, and other accessories.
  • Effective communication with Project Manager, Survey Manager, field and office personnel.
  • Following and participation in the safety procedures established by the project and company policies.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Associate Degree in Surveying or related field or 4 years of surveying experience with a minimum of a High School diploma or GED. Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Land Surveying or Geomatics is preferred.
  • Heavy Civil Construction surveying experience is a plus.
  • Carlson Survey software and Leica total station proficiency preferred.
  • Must be familiar with network adjustments.
  • Ability to work with a survey control network.
  • Ability to calculate various dimensions and relative parameters, read drawings and specifications, and extract detailed surveying related information.
  • Must be willing to relocate and work extended shifts.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to communicate with all positions on the team, interpret and execute work instructions while following safety rules and instructions and asking questions as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. several times a day.
  • Ability to work 100% in the field in all weather conditions and in confined space environments – tunnels.
  • Working experience with GeoLab, STAR*NET, Amberg Tunnel, or other tunnel surveying associated software is a plus.
  • Ability to climb a ladder and/or stairs to enter and exit the tunnel.\
  • Ability to work in a safety sensitive construction zone, around large machinery and heavy equipment and adjust to changing construction conditions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
